Seoul-based fashion photographer Intak Song shoots with purpose. Every shot is planned with consideration to directionality, light, composition. Where you think it may be constraining, Song’s work expresses a unique freedom that never feels far from reality. And that, again, is intentional. Song isn’t focused on perfecting a signature style, but allowing viewers to look at the world around them with a special touch of imagination, a small dose of playfulness that anyone can tap into. What inspired you to pursue fashion photography?
Intak Song: I have been interested in fashion since I was young. I always enjoyed taking pictures of people, so I did that a lot, as well. At the same time, I had the desire to capture something with a more special look. As time went by, I was eager to capture a better photo with each shoot, while also really enjoying the editorial aspect. As I got more experience and my work grew, I became who I am now.
How have you developed your signature style and how would you describe it?
I prefer a picture that feels unusual in common situations, with a little imagination. I prefer a style that doesn't seem too fanciful or out of the blue, that feels like a level of wit that anyone can think of. I'm attracted to a little bit of speciality that anyone is capable of imagining. I don't think I'm trying to develop my signature style, but focus more on tapping into imagination.
How do light and composition play into your work? Do you plan things out or prefer to keep things loose and candid?
I tend to think about directionality, because light and composition are a big part of my work process. I prefer indoor studio shooting to outdoor shooting. I make a plan to shoot and try not to deviate from what I plan — accidental elements don’t typically fit my style of shooting.
When you need some inspiration, where do you go to find it?
Camping and being out in nature allow me the time to clear my head and organize my thoughts.
How does travel influence your work and world view as an artist?
Traveling brings a lot of things to me. The image of travel itself brings me a lot of imagination and brings a lot of energy to the work I create. There are so many different cultures and experiences you discover by traveling, I hope people get to experience that for themselves.
Talk to us about what you’re creating DELSEY.
As I worked with DELSEY, I first noticed that the project highlighted so many countries. I think it’s a great idea to be able to show the atmosphere of each country and convey its essence to so many people. The part I wanted to how was Seoul, the capital of Korea. I imagined a busy Seoul in a forest of buildings that change rapidly. The lively color of DELSEY’s products stand out in the gray Seoul — DELSEY swimming freely in the sea of buildings.
What’s in your DELSEY?
Film Camera, Film - It’s fun to capture your travels on film rather than taking pictures on your phone.
Sunglasses - I prefer sunglasses with light tinting and the feeling I get looking at my destination through a lighter lens.
Running shoes - I enjoy running at travel destinations. Recently, I went to Osaka, Japan. The running in the park around Osaka Castle in the morning was quite refreshing.
