No space? No problem. For Lviv-based design studio, LIS, it’s not the typical guidelines of materials, budgets, or measurements that’s at the forefront of their mind when starting on a new project. From the start, says owner Roman Shpelyk, the main focus is always on visuals, intuition, and functionality. A chance to approach a new project with an individuality that reflects the design studio’s minimalistic aesthetic and enhances each space with a unique perspective. Such is the case for their Project 33, created in partnership with Uliana Smolska. One look at the space—featuring tall, clean lines and bright pops of color—and you’d never guess the project area covers a mere 60 square meters.
Most often inspired by Spanish, Scandinavian, and Japanese design studios, LIS has developed a refined, minimalistic style that effortlessly exudes a cool, modern tranquility. Shpelyk says this came about for Project 33 by taking a step back from obvious lines and geometric shapes, and focusing instead on creating a clean, simple space for existing in a small area. “We created a light, simple interior and divided the main areas with color accents,” he says. The whole room is really one space with a low divider, which at the same time is a storage area from the bed perspective and a soft reading bench from the other side. That duality is evident throughout the entire home, with mixed finishings and contrasting textures that feel uniquely cohesive.
Angles were another aspect that Shpelyk says was at the forefront of this design, often playing with mirrored angles to hide storage areas and also add depth and light to the space. The result is a space that, though initially was just one open plan, has a sense of discovery and ease around every corner. One that reminds us that it’s not about how much space you have, but what you do with it to create a long-lasting home.
