The German design studio Aesthek was founded in 2014 by Sebastian Netz out of the desire to bring together the fields of product design, craft, and aesthetic methods. “Aesthek is moved by an ideal of progressive elegance and contributing to modernist tradition,” the studio notes. This origin and approach distinguishes Aesthek from other design studios.
Having studied product and communication design, founder Sebastian Netz was always very involved with the concept of aesthetics. “I found the scientific methods for researching beauty and aesthetics very exciting. This is also where the name Aesthek finds its origin,” says the founder. This interest resulted in a unique approach connecting aesthetic theories with the creative process in and during the design.
Aesthek’s modern objects are restrained yet iconic, resulting from a dynamic dialogue with artists, designers, and architects. Besides Sebastian, other designers create pieces for Aesthek, including German design duo Gerdesmeyer Krohn who designed “TWO Tray”—a steel desk organizer.
The studio explores different shapes, colors, materials, and production methods with a great eye for detail. “We are always on the lookout for the otherness of things, and that’s how we create our products. We try to awake this feeling to the viewer,” Sebastian notes. The objects' clean lines emphasize their sculptural quality and progressive elegance, while the contemporary refinement shows great design and manufacturing skills.
The furniture and decorative pieces are handcrafted and of very high quality consisting mainly of powder-coated steel or the mirrors of polished stainless steel. Sebastian says they love working with these materials because of the production precision and wide range of colors but will venture into other materials in the future. At the moment, for example, they are planning products in wood to bring some warmth into the collections while remaining purist.
