The sculptural furniture pieces by Wonmin Park are almost shrouded in a veil of mystery when looking upon them for the first time. Exuding a strong sense of geometry, the pieces have a minimalistic and modern look. The South Korean designer Wonmin Park graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands and has since been a prominent participant of global design fairs such as Design Miami/. It is no surprise either that his furniture pieces, given their sculptural look and aura of artistry, have been exhibited in several museums as well. After having graduated in 2011, Wonmin founded his studio in Eindhoven where he creates intriguing pieces. Expanding his brand, he now has a production facility in Rotterdam and a creative studio in Paris.
His furniture pieces, which mainly consist of tables and shelves, have clean shapes and a strong geometrical sense. Wonmin uses resin which causes the works to have a surreal and mysterious look. The semi-transparent and matte effect enhances this dream-like vision and makes it seem like the pieces capture air. “I aim for a sense of lightness and purity,” the artist notes. The contours blur and have to be made out by the air and light in the setting, making the works “engage with their surroundings.” By sometimes adding color and the use of the resin texture, Wonmin feels like he is painting enveloped air. The artist’s technique and the mysterious look of the furniture reveal his “exploration of substantiality versus insubstantiality and his artistic evaluation of uncertainty, ambiguity, and vagueness.” Though the pieces are modern and minimalistic, they are always practical and aesthetically pleasing as well, radiating a sculptural sense of design.
