The young Danish design studio 101 Copenhagen creates stunning refined objects from lighting to ceramics, tableware and furniture. Based in Copenhagen, the brand perfectly reflects the elegance and serenity that is at the heart of Scandinavian design. “We have a strong vision to create a world of beautiful lighting and accessories of exquisite craftsmanship, quality and timeless design for Scandinavian living,” the brand notes. The studio was founded in 2017 by Tommy Hyldahl who was soon accompanied by two other designers Nicolaj Nøddesbo and Kristian Sofus Hansen. The three creatives complement each other perfectly each with their own talent and expertise but all focusing on the main aim to create functional, tactile designs with personality and a minimalistic, sculptural look. To achieve a sense of essentialism and sobriety, the shapes are straight forward, the materials natural and whites, beiges cremes are the go-to tones. Blending the Scandinavian design tradition and the timeless Japanese approach to materials and techniques, 101 Copenhagen designs characteristic products reflecting “the symbioses of design traditions whilst also featuring unique embedded stories, symbols and associations expressed in a minimalist idiom,” according to the brand. With their holistic approach, the trio conveys a dynamic freedom of expression.
